Too late to trim hedges?

I have about 75 ft. of forsythia(?) hedges on 2 of the borders of my back yard. I usually trim them several times during the growing season. This year, due to a shoulder problem, I haven't been able to trim them since June. Now that I'm better, I'd like to trim them. The problem:most of the leaves are off, and the branches resemble a porcupine in spots. My question: will trimming them now cause any problems in the growth cycle, getting through the winter, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about that far north but here in tenn, you can't damage them where they won't recover in short order.
