Re-do lot or get a mower & trimmer?
We have a ~3,000 sq. ft. lot that is pretty uneven. We have a reel mower, but the uneven lot makes it a hassle to mow, so we went and bought a $40 gas mower from the local yard guy in the neighborhood. It worked three times and is now completely dead (gaskets).
So herein lies the conundrum.
1. Purchase new mower & trimmer for $530.
2. Kill grass, lay down paver & pea pebbles, re-do landscaping.
Option 2 is our long-term goal. I'm not sure how much we could get done for the same cost as a new mower and trimmer... Any ideas? I think we would need at least 400 lb. of paver, but we don't want to cover the entire lot with paver anyways. We would like some flower boxes, a small patch of fescue grass, a patio of pavers, etc. Obviously, not all of this needs done immediately. What would need done immediately is killing the grass, probably tilling it, and putting something down in the meantime so that we aren't living in a bog during the wet season.

What have you tried in order to get the mower going again? what does it died because of gaskets mean? Why does your yard turn into a bog during the rainy season? Tilling and planting new grass may not be enough to rectify that. Pics of your lot might be helpful.
While high end mowers are nice, I've gotten a lot of service out of the cheap basic type mowers.

Depends what you want. Your long term goals are to make it flat with pavers. In the meantime get a heavy duty mower that can take the rough terrain. It will pay for itself in the long run.
Send some pics and maby we can give you better advice.

Okay, folks. I've decided to do both. We will do a bit with pavers, and keep some grass. We do need to keep the home marketable when we move out of it before too long.
Here is our street side. It gets littered on quite a bit, so I really want something low maintenance so that I don't have to dig through large bushes in order to clean it out. What do you guys suggest, and how do you suggest going about it? I have brought home a lot of cardboard to kill grass and plants with.

I'd keep the street side ivy. Maybe remove the other stuff so the ivy can fill in more consistently. On garbage day each week just pick up the beer cans and trash while they are resting on top. The ivy will also prevent you from having to mow that steep slope. The other areas just routing mowing and don't forget edging. I don't see your situation as being particularly rugged or difficult. It just looks like it's been neglected. A weekly mowing and trimming with a line trimmer will do a lot to improve the appearance.

Yep this whole place was neglected before we bought it. I use a reel mower, so I would rather ditch the grass. Maybe kill it off and let the ivy go or plant ornamental grass and mulch. Though that's the more expensive route.
Really want something lower maintenance, and that won't let the blackberries grow back.
