Question

I live in Z5 in NE PA and started seeds indoors last year too early. When do I start my veggie seeds indoors? I usually plant watermelon, cucumber, tomato, yellow squash, and eggplant. Can you help?

Check on the back of your tomato and eggplant seed packets. They'll usually tell you how many weeks beforehand to plant the seeds. Then just count back from when it's safe to plant in zone 5.

As for the watermellon, cucumber, and squash, they come up so fast that I usually plant them right in the ground as seeds. If you're REALLY eager, I suppose you could start them 2 weeks before you set them out, but it seems like a lot of effort for only 2 weeks of a jumpstart. Don't start these too early, as they grow quickly.

Have fun!
