Is it healthful mixing compost with soil for planting? Using pure compose might be a bit expensive when having dozens of plants.

Robert,
Mixing compost with your soil is no problem, whether from your own compost pile or bag bought composted manure. At a buck for a 40# bag, it shouldn't be too expensive. The bagged compost is only about 1-1-1, actually used more for conditioning the soil as opposed to fertilizing. You didn't say veggies or flowers, but you could also add some 10-10-10 fertilizer a week or two after the plants are set out.
