Citris fruit skins & gardening

Can you use citris fruit skins such as grapefruit & orange peels in you compost that you use for the garden, flowers, etc...?? I heard that too much citris oil in the skins would damage plants? Is this true?

A moderate amount of citrus rinds should be no problem. If you occasionally sprinkle a small amount of limestone dust, to sweeten the pile, it will neutralize the acid.
