New Japanese cherry tree

I planted a 4 foot tall Japanese cherry tree at the beginning of the season and it is growing very fast. I was wondering if cutting off the branches growing out of the trunk is allowable since it is only a few months old or if I have to leave them for the first year?

Keep the trunk pruned so that those branches heal over while small. Letting it go will only make a bigger wound.

I too prune as needed and don't wait for a particular season as long as it's only a few branches. For a heavy pruning I'll wait till the proper time but if I'm removing less than 1/4 of the trees growth I'll do it whenever the mood hits me.
