Little black specks all over my white deck rails from Blue Spruce?

Well, all summer I've been painting my deck and staining it and it's looking good, but the newly painted white rails are constantly being bombarded by these very small (kind of like pepper) black specks, especially on the top handrail part.

Is this coming from the trees?

Thanks

Sounds like mildew, can you post some pics of it?

Maybe - what kind of trees are around? Lots of flies or other insects in the area?

No not mildew, it's like black pepper and it covers all the railings everywhere. You can wipe it right off with your hand. I do live close to a paper mill, I hope it's not coming from there!

Maybe the paper mill burns something and it's raining soot when the wind blows it your way.

Thanks it may be that, but to me they're smaller than that. I'll have to take another look tomorrow, but I think these brush right off, I'm not quite sure right now and it's pitch dark out back on my deck.

Mildew won't brush off so it's not that same for most any 'drippings' from a tree or critter. It does sound more along the line of some sort of air pollution.

I agree with Mark, I know from experience the marks left by flies don't just wipe off

I don't understand. How does this fall only on the top rails of the deck and not the deck itself? Did I miss something?
