transplanting asparagus?

I have a raised bed garden with a dozen 4 year old asparagus plants.
I very stupidly used a fence as part of the garden.

Now my wife tells me we are replacing the fence, so the garden has to come up.
Can I salvage the asparagus? If so, what time of year is best? How would I go about it?

Thanks.

I would do it ASAP and follow the usual guidelines for transplanting. Have their new home ready so once you dig them up they can go directly into the new holes without the roots drying. Then keep the plant watered well for the next couple weeks.

Unfortunately they will go the same place they are; so they would be pulled out, the fence rebuilt, the garden rebuilt, and them planted again. I can't see that happening in less than a week.

You're going to need to find them a temporary home, then. They cannot stay out of their environment for a week. This is the worst time to transplant them, so they will go through a shock regardless.

Is there a better time to do it? Perhaps October? I am in NY.

Certainly, and October is better as they are more dormant at that time. You'll still have to find them temporary housing for a week until the fence is rebuilt.
