i recently found that i have peony in my yard. i saw the ants crawling all over them , and was told that it was ok, and not to bother them. but , tonight (with my hand only inches away before i noticed it) sat a huge spider bigger than a golf ball right on one of the blooms. do these plants actually draw insects? or spiders or both? are there plants that exist that attract insects and spiders? to say that i dislike spiders is an understatement. please help.

Peonie flowers have a sugary coating. The ants are apparenty required for the flower to open, or the sugar will hold them shut!

On the other hand, I've never heard of them attracting spiders. I imagine that a few twirls of a stick to destroy the web might convince him to move on. Although you hate them, they'll do some good in the garden; you can just try to convince them to stay more out of sight...

thank you. i dont think the spider in question was a web spinner, looked like a ground hunter. also looked way too much like a recluse. but i didnt know exactly why i was supposed to leave the ants alone, i didnt know about the sugar. you learn something new everyday! THANKS.
