I planted 2 clematis vines last weekend. I purchased them at a local store, and they came in a plastic bag surrounded by a mulch type material. I followed the planting instructions, but when I removed the plants from the bag, the surrounding mulch material just fell off, leaving me with simply long roots to plant. Do you think these will grow, or are they most likely already dead? I dug the holes deep enough to extend the roots.

You didn't mention if there was any green growth starting in the bag. The moss/mulch that fell off is not really needed. Be sure to keep your new plants watered, because the hot sun will bake a new Clematis really quick. Hopefully they will show new growth in a couple weeks.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply! There actually was not growth on the plants. Might that indicate they might be dead, or just still dormant?

Thanks,

todd

Todd,
They could still be dormant, so keep them watered for awhile. Hopefully, it is not the former. Next time, at the garden shop, make sure you choose ones that show some new leaf growth. Good luck- maybe in a couple weeks you'll be rewarded.

Thanks again. I will keep that in mind next time. These were the last 2 left, and it never even occurred to me that they should have growth. But I'm hoping that since there were 2 plants in each bag, that at least half of them grow. In the meantime I will be anxiously looking for growth.

Last year I had purchased black-eyed susan packed in the same way at Home Depot. I purchased 8 plants, and none of them ever grew. I did get my money back, but was still very disappointed. Hope this is not a repeat of that.

Hi Todd,

Good luck with your clematis. They need to be planted 2" lower than in a pot. In your case, two inches above the roots.
