We have a Crab Apple tree and it appears that some of the bark is falling off - almost like the tree is rotting away. Many places the bark is pailing off and cracking. Is this what they refer to as Cankers? What can I do about it? Please help, the tree looked fabulous this spring and we really don't want to lose it.

Thanks

Peeling bark on crab apple tree

Crab applies have thin bark that tends to be broken into scales. In older trees, say 12-15 years old, it is normal to see exfoliation of the bark on older parts of the tree. This is most obvious after a rainy period that follows a prolonged dry period. Make sure you protect the health of your tree with a regular insecticidal and fungicidal spraying program.
