Baby Tree Transplant
I have a large Schubert Choke Cherry growing in my yard and a little tree start growing beside it. Can this little one be removed and transplanted elsewhere?

so do I dig down a foot or so and try to move it? or should I do it next year when it is bigger?

Most trees have a taproot that can be as long as the tree is tall. So if you only plan on digging 1 ft deep, I doubt it will have much of a chance. The larger the root ball you get the better the chance. Wild trees are not like nursery trees that are grown for the purpose of transplanting.
If it's coming off the other tree roots, I agree it's not likely it would survive on its own.

I've had good luck transplanting by doing it in spring or fall. I use a shovel and about a foot away from the plant you want to transplant shove the shovel into the ground vertically as deep as you can get it. Do this in a full circle around the shoot. You are trying to sever it's connection to the parent plant but leave the baby undisturbed and without the added shock of transplanting. Then leave it for a couple months so it can establish it's own roots. Then transplant where you want it.
