Trimming fruit trees

I have a transparent apple tree that is old and looks like it has never been trimmed. I am in nw Ohio. How much can i trim it back in 1 year. It is one that only produces every other year. And this year is it.

This is not the time of year for pruning and not this year if you want to maximize fruit production. If pruning now I'd keep it to a minimum. Fruit trees can have a short life and since yours is old I would go easy and spread the pruning out over a couple years.
