pollinating pumpkins

We have three pumpkin vines growing. About 5 feet long, with male and female flowers. Planted them about six weeks ago. I don't notice any bees around.

When should I "assist" pollination? I have a how to guide...identify the male and female flowers, use a artists brush, etc.

How do I know when I need to intervene? (Stupid pumpkins...don't know how to "do it"!)

I have never had to assist pollination outdoors. You can play pollinator with the paintbrush if you want to be sure. If gentle it won't hurt anything.
