red raspberries
I have a patch of red raspberries and the new growth around the outside produces well. the thing I was wondering about is the old cane in the middle of the patch doesn't produce much at all. I was wondering how to thin out the old cane. just dig out the old plants or try to replant. dig out the old and let the new shoots grow from the roots next year? in general the best way to thin out the old cane so the new can take over. thanks in advance.

The canes live for two years and bear fruit the second year. So, after a cane fruits it's done. In late winter or early spring cut the old ones flush with the ground leaving the younger branches.
