Crown Vetch

Hi Zone 7,

Crown Vetch is VERY invasive. Unless you have a large area, you wouldn't want to use it. It looks very pretty while driving our highways, and does a bang up job on keeping the soil in place. Your conditions are fine. One plant will cover 6', and it's very fast growing.

While searching for a photo of it, I came across a discussion on GardenWeb where someone asked about it, and everyone told her not to plant it. Soooooooo, I'll let you decide. I've been wanting to plant some on our steep ditches, but it never makes it to my priority list. I could keep it in check from the grass by mowing. (photos) (This site says don't use crown vetch)

Thumbs down

Do not, I must repeat, DO NOT plant crownvetch unless you want to be forever cutting it back. I have a hillside in the back of my house and wanted to cover it quickly to cut back on, I planted crownvetch seeds that a friend gave me. What a mistake! It is very invasive and wants to climb up over the wild roses and rose of sharons. I'm about ready to spray it with Round-Up and start over again next year.
Wish I had read up on it more and asked for other's opinions before I planted it.
