maple tree

I have an old maple tree that has developed something on the trunk. I moved into this house in Jan. 2002 and the tree was here long before I got here. I am hoping someone can tell me what is going on and perhaps give a suggestion what to do. It starts at the bottom and goes up about ten feet. Thanks.

Looks like a woodpeckers' paradise. I would remove the tree.

Thanks, wirepuller. I know there wouldn't be a woodpecker messing around there unless there are bugs.

Do arborists charge to come out and look?

What does it mean, 'moved maple tree', on this site?

It was likely posted in the wrong forum and a moderator moved it to the correct one.

How do I know where he moved it to? I can't find it and I still don't know what the problem is with the tree.

You must have found it since you've replied to it twice since it's been moved. Any rate, to see where a particular thread is, just scroll up to the top of the page. You'll see this thread is in "Gardening and Horticulture".

Also, I think Wirepuller38 clued you in with his reply. Insects are probably destroying your tree.

The trunk appears to be dying. I suspect the damage originated when the tree was struck by lightening during a storm. Are the other trunks damaged? If not, remove the damaged trunk shown in the photo. As a side note, I believe we are looking at an elm tree.
