I live in zone #5 on the Canadian border, and am planting a new bed. If I seed now with marigold seeds and cover with paper & straw what are my chances for spring, or should I wait till spring to plant.---Thanks

retiredyes,
Marigolds are annuals and the seeds should be planted in the spring. If planted now, they will probably germinate and will not survive the winter.
There are still a number of items which can be planted now.
Mums especially, and most all of the spring bulbs - crocus, daffodils, hyacinth, tulips, and many others.
