Question cannas

I have just lifted my cannas roots from the ground this morning. What is the best way to store them over the winter for replanting next spring? Also the roots spread rapidly this summer, should i divide the roots now before storage or should they be divided next sring before planting? Northeast Ohio.

Here in Toronto, we usually store them in or on top of (dry) peat moss in a cold cellar or if you have an attached (unheated) garage, by an interior (by the house) wall so the tubers remain cool but will not freeze. If you haven't cut the tops off (they should still be green - or red), let them die back naturally before you do so. I've divided them both times with equally successful results, but my gut feeling is that by dividing them now, or rather after the foliage dies back, you'll give the cuts a chance to harden off before being put into moist conditions where fungus and rot have a better chance of establishing. >)
