leaves

Hi, I have an abundance of leaves. will they decompose on their own if they are put into a compost bin or will they just stay the way the are. I've added some grass and kitchen scraps and wet them down. How long does it take. I've mulched some and dug them into my garden. Thanks, Anita

Hi Anita,

There are many ways to make compost, and how you go about it determines how long it will take, but most organic materials SHOULD break down in a year. If you are faithful at stirring your pile and it heats up (cooks), it could take less time.

I'd like to make a plug for those leaf blower/mulchers. We finally invested in one this year, and talk about making the job easy. No raking or bagging of leaves! We bought a Homelite ($199) model, and it ground the leaves into a very fine mulch. Rather than put it on the compost pile, I spread it around my flowerbeds.

Before, I was using a leaf shredder that you place on top of a barrel. It worked, but very time consuming, not to mention a very dirty job.

If you'll search with "Google" you'll pull up LOTS of info on composting.
