landscape fabric alternative

Does anyone know if it is ok to use tar paper instead of landscaping fabric? I know it is cheaper and readily available. Has anyone tried it?
Thanks

Welcome loulou
I think Fred has used roofing felt, but best to let him tell you about it - if I don't see him posting back here in the next few days, will have to try to alert him to your query

Hey, I'm here now....... Just off the golf course.
Roofing felt (tarpaper) works pretty well. Weeds will not come up through it. It's more for a permanent type cover for mulch, but I certainly have poked through it for some specimen plants or fruit tree plantings. Water run-off will find a way around it, so I rarely have to poke holes in it. I overlap it about 4 to 6 inches. It is certainly worth a try. And the price is right for a roll of the stuff.
