removing branches from spruce tree
I have a large--30foot high-spruce tree in my backyard. Its a beautiful tree and I wouldnt want to do anything to harm it. The problem is that the lower branches of the tree are taking over my space. Would I be doing any harm to cut off the lower branches so that we could reclaim some of the space around the tree?

No, you wont harm the tree to trim the branches if you trim them in two stages. Make the first complete cut about 3 inches from the trunk of the tree. The second cut will be made as close to the tree trunk as possible, this will enable the tree to regrow bark around the wound and reseal the trunk.
Wish I had some pictures of a 150 year old oak at my mother inlaws to show you how it was trimmed improperly. It is like a night and day difference..Maybe I will post them and include a link
Good luck

Chad's given you a pretty good description of how to prune - just to add my 2 cents worth, the reason you make the first cut out a bit is so if the bark peels as the limb breaks away, it won't pull away bark from the trunk. You can make a small bottom cut on the branch in from where you'll be making the first trimming cut to help stop this peeling, also.
When you make the second (final) cut, try to match the cut so the angle is equal and opposite to the natural collar of the branch - that way, the wound will heal a lot better.
