Need to replace wood chip mulch?

Does wood chip mulch (cedar) need to be replaced? Or, does any type of mulch need to be replaced on like on a yearly schedule?

My cedar chips don't look as nice after a year of Texas heat but seems kind of weird "re-mulching". I see neighbors adding mulch and I'm not sure if it's just for looks or for the benefit of the trees and plants.

Hi PretzelB,

Wood mulch breaks down (decomposes) after a period of time adding nutrients to the soil. They could be adding to it to keep the depth at what is recommended for your Texas heat. They could also just be adding a fresh, shallow layer as the sun faded the old mulch.

Cedar mulch breaks down more slowly than some others. So, if you still have enough, there really is no need to add more. It's just a waste of $$$. I have cedar mulch in areas. Down deep it's still a reddish color. You might try just stirring it up a little to bring some of the mulch from below up to get some of the bright color back.
