Smile grapevines

Hi there. I recently bought a home in LIncoln, NE and the yard is gorgeous. I've identified most of the plants that I intend to keep, and those that I will replace next season. There is a huge grapevine out by the pond, which was basically laying on the ground when we bought. I put u0p a 2 1/2 foot trellis and it's exploding. Should I further trellis up, or let it start hanging in the pond and on the ground again? If I do put up another trellis, how big does this thing get?? I don't know what kind of grapes they are so I guess this is a grapevine in general quetion. Thanks so much.

Hi Melodie

Maybe later this summer you'll find out what kind of grapes you have. If you decide to keep it, a couple sturdy cedar or locust posts will work fine. You can stretch some heavy wire between the posts to a max of about four feet. This fall (late) you can trim back some of the vine and tie the main branches to your wire.
good luck,
fred
