Oven wrong temp; mysterious smell

I have a Crosley propane range; bought used about 6 months ago in excellent condition. It worked fine at first, though it did take much longer for the oven to light than our last oven did. Lately, however, it sometimes won't come up to temp at all -depending on the will top out at anywhere from 200 to 350 deg. Sometimes the display will show the actual temp, but sometimes it will keep going up when the oven temp is actually much lower. If the setting is changed, then the display will again show the actual oven temp.

In addition, during the same period we started noticing a very strong (not gas) odor when the oven door is opened. It burns our eyes and causes them to tear just like cutting an onion. I did clean out the gas jets, many of which were blocked with carbon; but the oven still doesn't work properly and the odor is still there.

Hello Allen. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Based on the problem description, carbon found in the oven, the burner may be out of adjustment or not setup to burn propane. Was the appliance using propane before?

Anothe possibilty could be the flames are smothering do to a lack of oxygen. There should not be any aluminum foil used in ovens anywhere. The lower panel must be level and the burner must be installed onto the gas valve correctly.

The burner must also be level. No visable yellow flames should be seen. The warm air vent must not be blocked or restricted. There must be a free flow of air into the burner area from the intake vents provided by the manufacturer.

Carbon on the burner indicates one or more of the above conditions may exist. The odor is unburned gas. The odor contains chemicals which are toxic and should not be inhaled.

If you are unable to determine the cause of the problem and correct it, hire a pro and do not use the oven in the condition it is currently in until the condition is corrected.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model & serial numbers.
