Question hot water heater

I recently moved into an older apartment and my hot water heater is extremely loud! It sounds much like a bunch of rocks running through the pipes! Do I need a new water heater or what is causing this and how can I stop it?

Would you say the noise is in the tank and the water like .Are could it be down in the burner. lots of time if the gas burner is not set right it will light down in the venturi tube of the burner and make a h*** of a noise. check and see where it is comeing from and post back. Try and flush it out first and see if that helps. Read post on flushing the water heater out.

Hello tnydancerla and Welcome to our Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances forum.

Flushing out the sediment which has settled on the bottom of the inside of the tank should help reduce or eliminate the noise.

The instructions to flush the tank are contained within the link below. The help info link is provided to help also.

If the noise is a fluddering sound, contact the gas company via their customer service number. A field rep will check the appliance for you.

The phone number is listed on the gas bill, if the gas is natural gas. 24 hour phone service is available to place a service request.
