Gas Dryer

Gas Dryer
Wow,
I am very new to gas appliance thing as I just moved into a new home. I am very young an unexperienced and was wondering if you can give me a few easy tips. I have this Maytag Gas Dryer that was here when I moved in. I have no intention of getting a different dryer because I understand they do have multiple benifits over electric and i just dont want to spend the money.
My problem is, Im not exactly sure what i should be seeing with a fully functional gas dryer. In the front of my dryer there is a panel that you can lift up and see all the neat stuff underneath. When you fire up the dryer you see the glowing stick and then it will eventaully go back to non-glowing after a few moments. This repeats itself throughout when the dryer is turned on. Now, I dont atually see any flame when this process is taking place. Should I? I was kinda wondering if the valves were shut off before I got here but I am uncertain. There is a small valve when i first open the front panel that was facing with the pipe (IE: it was facing up, i dont know how else to explain it). I dont know if it needs to be at a 90 degree angle or not, i dont notice a difference when i move the valve between the 2 positions. I dont smell a noticeable difference between it in either position.
So to recap...
1. Is the glow suppose to switch between glowing/non-glowing only once or multiple times?
2. The mini-valve in the front, is there a position its most likely suppose to be in, im confused if its what is what.

Hello Senator. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Yes. The hot surface glowing ignitor will cycle on and off even when the machine is running as it should. Most likely the gas is turned off. All valves on the gas supply lines must be inline with the pipes to be in the on position.
If the internal gas shut off valve is parallel with the pipe, the valve is on. Same applies to the gas shut off valve on the supply pipe behind the dryer.
Be sure the gas is on to all the other appliances (if any) in the house. If those appliances are working, than gas is on to the house. If all valves are on to and at the dryer and the druer still does not work, may be a mechanical problem with the dryer, etc.

Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, downloadable repair and or owners manuals which may be available online.
Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the most likely possible problem may be. They will need the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance parts dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and problem resolving matters. Dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.
Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs. Always check for gas leaks whenever moving the appliance and/or a repair includes any connection of a gas part.
Read the existing questions on the subject of dryers. Doing so will quickly provide you with answers to questions & provide additional information on how to resolve the problem.

It's always adviseable to clean the entire exhaust venting system every 2 years. Or during any dryer maintenance, connection, servicing and or repairs.
