Hello Annie:

First off, ANY explosion type sound coming from any gas appliance <especially on any heater> is not exceptable!

That type of explosion noise upon starting <firing up> is called "Delayed Ignition" and left uncorrected, it will, over time, cause firebox damage. It must be corrected, if it is in fact delayed ignition.

You mentioned a continous noise while the heater is running. Is it a rumbling or boiling type noise? Reason I ask is, you mentioned BOILER. Boiler as in heating hot water used in baseboard heating or radiant heating through the floor?

Does the noise remain the same moments after the heater starts up <the explosion sound> and continue or does it change? If it changes to sounding like a roaring sound it could be several other possiblities.

Best to get another in home opinion. Calling your local gas utility for that second opinion may be a good idea too.

Good Luck.
Thanks Lydia for moving the posting and thanks to handyman also for posting the suggestion...:-)
