Dryer heats up and then goes out

I have a 5 year old White Westinghouse dryer (Model #WGD446JBS1) that will heat up for about 5 minutes on a regular dry cycle and then the flame will go out. The igniter comes on and it glows, but there is no flame. The machine clicks a couple of times then the glow goes out. Can I get some troubleshooting assistance please. Thanks.

Possible Causes, Help and Solutions

Hello Prirod. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Most likely cause (based upon the time duration & problem description) is a restricted exhaust system. Check the entire venting system and the exhaust vent hood.

Next possible cause is a defective solenoid. Both solenoids are mounted on top of the gas control valve. A defective flame sensor may also be a cause. This part is mounted on the burners flame shroud. A defective gas valve is yet another possible, but not as likely cause.

Best to start a disagnostic proscess with the simplest possible causes. Venting system first. Once that system is determined to be okay, the next steps can be taken.

Remove the entire venting system from the back of the machine. Dry a load of clothes and note the results during the drying process. Condition remains the same, another problem exists. If the dryer drys normally, the venting system is the problem.

CAUTION: Do Not attempt to repair the gas valve. This is a non repairable item. Replacement is the only option, if defective.

Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs or services. Always check for gas leaks whenever moving the appliance and/or a service or repair includes any connection of a gas part.

Read the existing questions on the subject of dryers. Doing so will quickly provide you with answers to questions & provide additional information on how to resolve the problem.

Help also available through the advertisors on this site, in the forum topic ads and in the Go Shopping and How To's links in the banner ads above.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the most likely possible problem may be. They will need the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance parts dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and problem resolving matters. Dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.
