The thermocouple on my gas furnace needs to be replaced at least twice a winter. What could be possible causes for this?

Hi:coldinodak

Thermocouples usually last much longer then you say yours are. And those you installed should also.

They are only warrantied for about 30-90 days however, even if installed by a heating contractor or plummer.

The cause could be one of several.

Since the thermocouple produces a tiny an amount on current, it could be the magneto head in the control valve has too high a resistance valve.

This means it requires too much current from the thermocouple to keep it open.

You may want to change the magneto head next time and see if that cures the problem. You could also have it tested at the local appliance parts store.

There could also be high resistence in one of the other componets in the system that the t-couple energizes.

Other possible causes:

The pilot flame may not be heating the t-couple correctly. It must be correctly positioned so the pilot heats only the tip. It must glow brite red in color.

The pilot flame itself may not be hot enough do to it's size and or because of lint.

The t-couple must be snuggly screwed in to the magneto head.

Hope these tips help you locate and correct the problem.

Good Luck,
TomBartco
