Question

I have a gas oven that the pilot is on, but most of the time, the oven never heats up. However, If I turn it on, and let it sit for 45 min to an hour sometimes it will go ahead and heat up. Any ideas on what this could be?

Hi:SNemiroff

Based on the problem discription, it sounds like the actuating pilot is dusty. That's the larger pilot flame you'll see when you turn the thermostat on.

That larger flame heats an element called a flame switch or fluid safety. If it's not heated fully it will not turn on the burner or if heated slowly, do to a linted pilot, it will delay the burner from turning on.

That larger pilot you see should be all blue and hot. No yellow visable. If it has lint you'll need to blow air into it when it's off to clear the lint, then relite the main pilot.

If all this is correct, the safety element may be weak and need to be replaced. The instructions are located in the archrives of this forum under ovens with like problems.

Your local gas company may offer a free in home service for minor problems such as this and or parts replacements. Contact them and inquire.

Good Luck,
