Question thermocoupler problem?

Hello! I am having trouble with my whirlpool propane stove. It came free from a friend and I would love to get it working right. He replaced the thermocoupler as advised by a whirlpool rep and is positive that it is wired correctly. Unfortunately, the heating element shuts off within minutes of lighting. Our friend ended up throwing his hands up over it and getting a new stove. Again, I'd love to get it working and get back to baking! Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Susie

Several Possibilities

Hello Susie and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances topic.

The pilot generator could be weak even though it has been replaced. Usually they last for years but when the current one was replaced is unknown. If it was recently replaced, it may no be heated properly by the constant burning pilot flame.

Usual cause is a dirty pilot assembly. Blowing it out with a can of computer keyboard cleaner (compressed air) usually resolves that condition. Pilot flame must be out and assembly allowed to cool off first before clean with the cleaner.

Another possibility is the gas control the t-couple screws into is weak. This part is no longer made. It is a combination of safety valve and gas control valve with a push button reset. Obsolete and not available as a new part nor a rebuilt part.

Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be, based upon that specific brand and model. Except for the safety/gas control combo part. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.
