GE JGBS20 - Oven comes on by itself

Oven is turning on/off by itself. It does this on a consistent basis. I had to uplug the power to the stove to keep this from happening. The oven knob is on the "off" position, we thought the knob was getting stuck but that is not the issue. Any response is greatly appreciated. Thx.

Hello Mr. Johnny. Welcome to Gas Appliances topic and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Without a written description of the type of ignition system (spark or hot surface glow ignitor) used on that model and how the determination was made that dial rotating does not effect the operation ("Oven is turning on/off by itself") of the oven, needs to be known.

If the oven has a non electronic touch pad front control panel, the thermostat may have stuck ignition contacts, a short may exist somewhere in the wiring or a part like the gas control valve, etc. An ohm meter testing can be used to determine if the T-Stat is infact operating properly.

If that model does have an electronic touch pad control, several possibilities can exist. The diagnostics process differs between the two different types. Since I do not and often cannot check out the manufactures pages and or diagnostics pages for each question answered, I do however try to include them.

This link will provide much more details.

Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be based upon that specific brand and model. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.

Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, repair and or owners manuals which may be available online.

Cautionary Reminder Note:
Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.
