I just bought a house and it has an ancient tappan gas oven. The oven initially lights when turned on but goes off after a minute or so and wont come back on till cool. Any suggestions please.

Tappa Gas Oven

Pilot light stays on, burner lights, burns for a minute, then goes off.

Hello: johnandmary

One of two common causes.

The larger actuating flame is weak and not heating the safety element (bulb) enough. A weak flame is one that may appear yellow or slightly yellow(ed). In this case, blowing out the dust corrects the problem.

A weak larger flame (actuation flame) then becomes slightly distorted when the burner turns on, which then applies less heat to the safety element (bulb) and the burner then cycles off. Cleaning the entire pilot assembly often corrects the problem.

A can of compressed air works wonders to clean a pilot assembly. Same type of canned compressed air used to clean computer keyboards can be used. Insert extension tube into pilot assembly and blast out dust, etc.

Also do the same at the one or two holes slightly behind the pilot flame. Air holes will be in the tube that brings gas to the pilot just behind where the flame is located.

Be aware that cleaning may or may not resolve the condition. See below.
Be advised that warm air flow up wards from the burner, when the oven burner is on, can also cause the problem described. Remove all items and/or foils which may be in the oven and/or broiler compartments.

Second most common cause, if the above does not apply, is a weak element. That element is the bulb the larger flame heats. If heated correctly the safety element bulb may still be weak and or defective. Replacement is then required.

Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be based upon that specific brand and model. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.

Cautionary Reminder Note:
Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.
