Gas Stove Shorting Out

hey guys,
we have a whirlpool gas stove in our house. this morning it decided to act funny. When we turn a knob for a burner to light, it popped, sparked like crazy, and tripped the breaker. So I turned off the gas supply since I got nervous. I reset the breaker and then the pilot light clicked like normal as though it wanted to light, no popping, no shorting out. When I turned the gas back on, it shorted out and again and sparked like crazy again. Any idea whats going on?

Hello Joseph and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and to the Gas Appliances topic.

I took some extra time to try to think this one through. Despite doing so I was unable to determine a likely cause for the condition described.

Never personally encountered a cooking stove or residential appliance appliance that exhibited the condition you're described. Shorting out of the entire electrical system by simply turning on the sparker(s) and gas to light a top burner.

Turning on the gas to light a burner causing a short in the electrical wiring system that trips a circuit breaker? Humm. Must be more unknown information not included in your posted question. (???)

Kindly use the reply button and add more detailed information. Doing so is likely to add more clues to the possible cause(s). Thanks.
