Maytag Dryer no heat

My Maytag gas dryer is not heating. I read through the previous posts and followed the steps as listed. Checked the glow ignitor function - appears ok, checked continuity on all devices including solenoids - all checked ok. When I started dryer, the flame cycled on and off properly about 3 times. After that though, the glow ignitor would come on but before lighting the flame, it turned back off. There is a rattling sound which seems to be coming from the gas valve. It seems like the solenoid is trying to open the valve but doesn't.

Does this sound familiar and if so do you think the culprit would be the gas valve itself, the solenoid or something else?

I appreciate any assistance!

My guess would be a flame sensor. Look for a metal rod with a wire attached to one end. It should be almost in front of one of the main burners. If you find it, remove it and wipe the rod lengthwise with fine steel wool or sandpaper. A few gentle wipes should do it. Reinstall and test dryer.

The three tries and you are out sounds like a common problem with dirty flame sensors.

Thanks but don't have this part on the dryer. There is a sensor in the duct after the gas valve unit and the ignitor that i believe is the flame sensor, but it is a flush mount device. Checked continuity on it and it checks out fine. I really believe it's something in the valve or the solenoid, since I could hear the rattle when the ignitor was trying to fire up the flame and if i pressed on the solenoid, the rattle would dampen. just not sure if its as simple as changing solenoids or if its likely a valve sticking.

There is a flame sensor, but it looks different than I described. It should be mounted on the side of the burner tube. Check the link below and see if that helps.
Also a clogged vent can cause cycling problems.

Hello JTPACKERS. Welcome to the Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

2 most likely causes for the condition described.

Defective solenoid(s). Work properly when cold or warmed up slightly. When hot after several minutes of usage, one drops out, which shuts off the gas flow to the burner. Replace them. Sold only in matched pairs. Likely to resolve the condition.

Second possible cause. Defective gas control. Gas controls internal valve dropping out. Only solution is to replace the entire gas control valve. This part is non repairable.

Not so likely but another rare possible cause, flame sensor. Which is located on the flame shroud. Flat metal sensor with two wires connected to it. If the is continuity through it both cold and when hot, it's working okay. No need to replace it.

Another possible cause is a restricted exhaust venting system. Disconnect vent from back of dryer. Turn machine on with clothes in it and note results. If dryer works okay, vent restricted. If the same condition exists, problem is as stated above.
