Unhappy

I have a gas dryer that is rumbling so loudly that we have to keep the laundry room door closed in order to carry on conversations in the house. Can anyone tell a novice repairman what to do to correct this problem ? Thanks

Hi: Dave

Based on what you posted, my most likely guess is worn rubbing pads on the door.

To find these, you will need to remove that front panel. <Be sure to unplug the dryer first!> Attached to the inside of the door and front panel you will find a metal or plastic support for the front of the drum. Look for some form of rubbing pads on that support.

Should those be worn out, replace them. You may already need to replace that whole plastic support assembly <if it is plastic> by now. This noise usually starts with a squeak or a squeal and get progressively worst with time.

Once that is checked out, look at the rear of the drum. Supporting it will most likely be two rollers. These run on brass inserts called bushings. These may also needed to be replaced.

Some dryers use a rear bearing support. You will see this by looking inside the drum on the back middle of the wall. It will have about 4 screws or bolts visable. This rear bearing may be the culprit too.

Should this be the case, you will need to remove those screws or bolts plus the rear panel. Remove that greased bearing.

If your handy with tools, remove all or any of those parts and write down the dryers make and model numbers <found on a plate on the outside of the front panel> on the dryer, then head over to your local appliance parts store with checkbook, credit card or cash...you'll need it. LOL

With the door still removed but the safety button wires still attached, plug in the plug, turn on the dryer briefly. <You may want to support the front of the drum with a shop cloth in your hand.>

If that noise is still there, even somewhat still there, it may be those two rollers or that rear bearing.

Also watch the rotation of the rollers for smooth rolling. One bad bearing can make an lot of pounding noise.

If you have to replace ANY parts, I would suggest you replace ALL those glidders, front support if in doubt as to it's condition, both rollers if one is or appears worn and also check the belt.

It's best to do this ALL now or you may find yourself repeating this again very soon. <Personal opinion here of course.>

Hint:
Before doing any inspection or repairs once the front panel is removed, vacuum out ALL the lint. Lint is extremely flammable and the major cause of dryer fires.

Good Luck
