Question

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a conventional oven that used light each burner via electric spark ignition. I used to hear a clicking sound then it would fire up. Now there is no more clicking sound on any burners and I have to light by match. I'm sure this is a common problem, but I cant even figure out how to get the cooktop removed and locate the part that may be damaged can anyone please advise. Thanks in advance.

Hi:neals

If ALL the sparkers fail to work, most likely it's not just a simple cleaning around the burners problem.

Be sure there is power in the wall socket. Test with a lamp and bulb. If there is power, pull the plug out.

Remove everything form the stove top including those knobs. If your stove top isn't a sealed burner type, check that ALL those wires are connected to the gas valves.

Clean the sparkers if there are two, one each in between the burners. Use a pipe cleaner if you have one. These work very well for that job.

Once your done there, if the top opens, locate that small black box under a cover. You will need to remove one or more screws to access it.

Disconnect the wires attached to that spark module and take it to your local stove parts repair and service store for testing. If it proves to be burned out, replace it.

HINTS & TIPS:
Be sure to hand draw a wiring diagram of where ALL wires you removed go back to.

If your stove top has sealed burners, look under the stove top for an access removeable panel for that black module sparker.

Be reminded here that your dealing with full house current everywhere in and under the stove or oven when your working on it.

Check back in the archives for further information on this subject.

Good Luck,

Question

Tom, I appreciate the quick response, thank you. My problem is I cant even get the top of the oven off to expose anything. Its not a cooktop stove. Its a sealed burner unit with burners that unscrew. Once unscrewed there is an orange wire going from each burner to some kind of junction module. I'm sure theres some trick to getting the cooktop off, but I cant figure it out. Can you help me with getting the cooktop off to expose the guts? I dont have any instructions/operations manual either.

Hi:neals

Your almost there. Regarding those wires attached to each burner, check each one to be positive they are firmly attached.

YES! Each one must be checked and also at each burner valve. If you do find one wire loose, off the end, burned, etc. then you have found the problem.

If not, continue as discribed below.

To access the underside, you will need to remove the back panel, just above the oven section in the rear of the stove. Pull the stove out and enter from there.

That black module is the part you want to remove and have tested. If defective, replace that part and re read my first posting on tips and hints.

Good Luck

{{{FYI}}}

<This is the part that was added as an edit.>

I for got to mention one very important point. Might sound stupid but very worth while mentioning.

BESURE TO USE AN OLD TOWEL OR RUG UNDER THE FRONT PADS AND LIFT THE FRONT OF THE STOVE ONTO IT! THEN TILT THE STOVE TOWARDS YOU TO LIFT THE REAR PADS OFF THE FLOOR.

Now begin to carefully slide the stove foward. This will reduce the possiblity of tearing up or scratching up an flooring! Use this same method to return the stove.

This rug/towel trick works for DRYERS too!
Saves us MANY $$$$$ replacing or repairing a customers flooring...which isn't CHEAP!
