Needed to replace the belt now the dryer doesn't heat up. Gas is hooked up properly but when you turn it on you can smell gas but it doesn't ignite? Help.

Hi:ccv
Without knowing the make and age of the dryer, it would be difficult to say exactly why the dryer turns on and you smell gas.
The dryer may be the type that has a constant burning pilot. It should have an access compartment door on the lower right or left side of the front panel.
Have you ever opened this access door and noticed a very tiny pilot?
Does it have a RED pullback lever on the gas control valve? <The lever should be right there in front, just behind the access panel.>
Do you see a lever when you open the access panel?
Without knowing the answers to the above questions, it would be difficult to offer some help.
You say you can smell gas when it's on. Therefore, do not use it until it is fixed correctly. Try contacting the gas utitilty company for service or any local appliance repair agency.
