Question

I have a Ruud vertical gas furnace 1982 model or thereabouts. I'm having trouble lighting the pilot or I should say after going thru the procedures indicated on the panel the pilot refuses to stay lit. I've tried several times holding the knob longer each time but it's not working. The flame is blue by the way.
It's getting cold very rapidly now ........ does anyone have any ideas about this problem?
Thanks.

Hi,

Last time we had a recalcitrant pilot light (at my mom's), it was the thermocouple, which senses the pilot flame and keeps the pilot valve open, that had failed....

PG&E, our utlility, came out and replaced it for her for free and re-lit her pilot...

Hi:frankz

Does sound like the thermocouple has burned out. It will need to be replaced. The thermocouple is the element the flame is heating pilot.

Check other postings in the archives for more information and instructions with replacing it.

I had a service man come out and he found a faulty limit switch, the thermocouple was OK.
Thanks for the reply.
