Kenmore 110 dryer Model #97273100 Gas Dryer
After removing the filter located on the top surface of the dryer, a pen was dropped down in the filter shaft. Now when you push the start button, the dryer hums. When you release the start button, there's silence. Are there parts of the dryer that can be removed to get inside to remove the pen?
We would like to try to get at the pen first before spending money on costly repairs. Thank you.

The pen most likely has fallen down onto the fan cage. In order to access the fan or just inside the cabinet in general, you'll have to unplg it first. Then locate the screws that hold the front panel on.

Check for screws at the bottom front and inside the door front. Also see if there are clips between the top cover and the front panel.

Some dryers used sliding tops that pull forwards to release the top cover. Some models the front panel pulls outwards from the bottom first, then unhindges from the top cover.

You'll have to be willing to try one or several methods to remove both the top cover and the front door panel. Once inside the cabinet, locate the pen and remove it.

While the dryer is apart, clean out the entire cabinet of all dust and lint. Your most likely going to be surprised how much lint there may be in there. It's that lint that causes dryer fires. The number one cause for fires in laundry rooms, garages, basements, etc.
