Length of gas line for dryer

Is there a limit to how long the line should be from the appliance to the cutoff valve? The retailer where we bought the washer and dryer required we buy a connection kit but didn't offer anything longer than 4 feet, which is plenty long enough with the dryer in the same spot as the old one. But I calculate that if I swap the placement of the washer and the dryer (that is, move the dryer about 3.5 feet to the right) then I can reduce the length of the exhaust vent from about 20 feet to about 8. Plus I don't have to reverse the hinging of the dryer door. But the 4 foot connecter is just a little too short to reach that distance.

A six footer on the other hand... if there is such a thing.
