Question Trying to Remove Glass Cover For Light Bulb in Viking Oven

Hello,

Recently, the light bulb went out in our Viking Professional oven (model VGIC3054BSS). There's a round, thick glass cover over the bulb housing. According to a Viking rep., the glass cover is supposed to unscrew.

After various attempts (unscrewing, shifting, pushing, pulling) and many sprays of WD-40 (don't worry, the power was off), the glass cover just does not budge. I attached an image of the front of the range and a close-up of the glass cover in question.

Does anyone else have any expertise to offer? I definitely don't want to have to pay a professional to replace something as simple as a light bulb/cover.

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance!

Have you tried oven cleaner? Baked on stuff will not release with WD-40.

Does it wiggle at all?

The glass is going to be quite tough. Don't be afraid of breaking it. You might want to go and buy a strap wrench if you can't do it by hand. Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Regular degreasing cleaner like Simple Green or even 409 will work better than WD40.

Have you succeeded? We're having the same problem with a Kenmore gas range. My husband purchased an oil filter wrench yesterday and still couldn't do it. Not enough room to move it. We're getting really frustrated--and I need that light for my baking!

The OP never came back. Have you tried any of the suggestions given?

We've tried all kinds of things that might grip the cover (rubber gloves, wrench, two types of oil filter wrenches), but no go. It moves just slightly in either direction but won't unscrew. I haven't tried de-greasers or oven cleaners because it's not really dirty at all and there doesn't appear to be any build-up of gunk. This is extremely frustrating.

I'm moving this to Gas Appliances to give it a wider viewing.

Success!

After months of procrastination my husband finally got out the WD-40 and it worked! He said it still took quite a lot of effort to turn, but he did it and I'm so happy to have light in my oven again!

Trying to remove glass cover for light bulb in viking oven

Just bought a Tool Shop #261-4633 Universal Oil Filter Wrench (see attached photo) at Menards for $10.00. It attaches to a 3/8" socket wrench. I put two socket extensions on, so I didn't have to crawl inside the oven. It worked great.

Thumbs down Maytag Manual Incorrect on Oven Light Lens Removal

I just fought through the same problem with my Maytag Gas Range - Precision Touch Control 500. The oven light cover appears to be identical to the one shown in the Viking oven in the earlier posting in this thread. Complicating matters was that the Maytag manual gives INCORRECT instructions for both removing the lens cover and removing the bulb. The manual says to, ". . . use fingertips to grasp edge of bulb cover. Pull out and remove." Then, "Carefully remove old bulb by pulling straight out of ceramic base." Yes, "straight out" is in bold font in the manual. I nearly pulled the whole socket assembly out of the oven before I tried (again) to unscrew the cover, and this time it came free. I am attaching photos of a) the oven light socket, and b) light cover and bulb that was removed by pulling "straight out". Maytag should be ashamed.

Welcome to the forums.

The Maytag socket is very similar.

I can see by the page views that this is a HOT topic but it's going back to our searchable archives where it will remain for future reference.

If you have a problem or issue not helped by this thread.... please feel free to start a new one.
