Old Maytag gas dryer
#1

My dryer won't stop by itself when the bell goes off when clothes are dry like it used to. I have to open door for dryer to stop. The dryer is about 20 years old.

Timer
Hi: toyotagirl
The timer controls this function. The door has an interrupt safety switch. Which is why the dryer turns off when the door is opened.
The timer for the dryer will have to be replaced. It's costs and the labor to install it will have to be considered before it can be determined if it would be cost effective to repair the appliance, based on it's age.
If your going to replace it yourself, contact the local parts store or visit the store to get the cost for the timer. Be sure to bring the make, model and serial numbers with you. This information is located on a plate inside the door.
There are several other posting within the archives of this forum on how to replace this item. be sure to unplug the dryer before attempting any repair.
