Does the grease on a grill rot the metal?

Thinking about winterizing the grill. The grill has a covering of grease and oil from cooking throughout the year. At first I though about spraying it all down with oven cleaner, then I though that the grease would be a good rust protector if I left it on. Anybody got a clue. It will be stored outside with a good cover.

Sounds like too much work to me - I never clean that stuff off mine, I only clean the cooking grate.

I agree with Mitch. Nothing to winterize, but then I don't know why anyone would. We keep a shovel nearby, throw on a coat, and use it year-round. If I were going to park it though, I might duct tape some cardboard or whatever over any openings large enough for mice to get into before putting the cover on it.

As aka pedro said, mice may find a nice home with plenty to eat. Personally, I would clean off the heaviest buildup, but leave a little to protect from, corrosion and rust. Check it carefully next spring for mouse residue before you fire it up.
