Hello and welcome hpope to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliance forum.
The only safe way is to turn the gas off first. This can either be done at the shut off isolation valve or at the gas meter.
The isolation shut off valve should be located behind the stove on the pipe sticking out of the wall. If your referring to a counter top stove, the valve should be located within the cabinet below the counter top.
If there isn't any shutoff valve located on the supply line near the appliance, you'll have to turn off the gas to the whole house. This can be done at the gas meter.
At the gas meter, there will be a shutoff valve located on the meters gas inlet supply line. This valve should be on the LEFT side of the meter. You'll most likely need a 12 inch adjustable <cresent> wrench to turn off the valve.
