GE gas oven lights but emits strong gas odor

My GE JGB620REF3SS has recently been emitting strong gas odor only when the oven is on. Heats up but smells so bad I have to open windows. I replaced the igniter with no avail. It also takes a while to light causing a decent VOOM when finally lighting. Faulty regulator? I checked the holes on the aluminum gas tube and they looked fine, took a toothbrush to them any how with no change.

Faulty regulator?
Possible but very doubtful.

That is a classic example of an igniter problem.
Did you have that problem, change the igniter and still have the same exact problem ?
All igniters are not the same even if they look the same.

The igniter should glow pretty much white hot before ignition.
Typical problems with burners are the holes that are directly under the burner and near the igniter get plugged with rust causing delayed ignition.

Yep new igniter glows nice and hot. Direct replacement part for the specific model. I smell gas even with the stove top burners though not as bad. No rust or corrosion on the burners, it's only 3 years old.

How old is the range ?
Did you buy it new and set for natural gas or was it converted from propane to natural gas ?

Have you used the broiler...... is it working ok ?

The oven circuit is very simple..... the igniter is in series with the oven side of the safety valve. When 120v is applied to the circuit..... the igniter glows. When it reaches approx 3-3.2 A of current draw.... the valve opens and it lights.
The next step is to check the running current of the igniter. It requires a clamp on type current meter.

Have you been doing any painting, cleaning with strong solvents, using anything with odors in kitchen? Smells from gas appliances usually are from something other than the appliance.I have found smell coming from neighbors painting there house next door.

I'd recommend calling your gas provider and have them check operating gas pressures into the house and at the oven.
