My sister-in- law has a gas grill and the racks are rusting. Her husband used to take care of it, but he died and now everything is left up to her. So she is wondering how to clean it . It has to be fairly simple because she only has the use of 1 arm . rvanwhy@enter.net

Hello Romayne

Since there is already rust, about the only solution is to replace the racks. Rusted racks can be found in parks, beaches, lakes, etc. therefore, the rust may not pose any health concerns.

If cleaning is not possible, replacement is the only answer. If some elbow grease can be used, sanding with sand paper may restore the surface. Then a through washing should be done to remove any grit left.

If the grates are only slightly rusted, some hand wire brushing should be enough. If the grates are steel and badly rusted, replace them.

Future non stick useage on cleaned grates can accomplished by pre spraying the grates with a spray pan coating prior to firing up the burners.

Not to worry too much. The rust is only iron. The human body needs some...haha......some rust on the grates is okay.

Regards & Good Luck
