Dryer won't heat

I have a Maytag dryer that tumbles but will not heat. It is probably less than 10 years old. Is there a pilot light in the newer dryers? I take it that there is no need to light it as I have never had to light one. How would do you suggest I proceed to look for the problem ?

Arrow Glow Coil

Hello G. Butts. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Later model dryers do not have pilots. They use a glow coil in place of a pilot flame.

Maytags and many other brands have an access panel door in the front of the dryer, which reveals the burner assembly and compartment.

Open this access panel. Turn the dryer on as usual and notice if the glow coil glows. The glow coil must glow. It must be HOT and glow an INTENSE bright yellow orange color.

If the coil fails to glow an intense bright yellow orange color, it's considered to be burned out. If it fails to glow at all, it's also possible it's completely burned out. Replacing the coil oftens resolves the problem.

Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes and solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair proceedures and instructions, pictorials and schematics, which may be available online.

An excellent source for orginal replacement parts is your local retail appliance parts store. Appliance parts dealers test and carry replacement parts for all appliances. Parts dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Retail parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers if you stop in at the store. The info will help to determine the exact parts used in the model assembly line run and possible problem causes.
