Dryer does not turn, but does heat up

Our gas dryer suddenly stopped turning. It does heat and make a close to normal sound, as though it were drying as usual.... But if you open it, it has obviously not been turning.
I have not worked on dryers before, but have heard this could be a belt problem?
Any pointers or insight? If it is a belt, is this usually a simple repair, and what is the average cost?

Thanks in advance!

Cool

Hello,

If the motor is running and you have heat with no drum movement...could very well be a broken drum belt.

Pointers and insight:
Loads linked here

Depending on age, model, belt...most are not difficult to replace

Average cost?...of the belt?...or the whole job if you call someone?

Belts can vary from 10-50 dollars....the whole job...service call, labour, belt...average 75-100 dollars.

Hope this helps,

jeff.

Talking My Two Cents Worth

Hello: Jeff Placzek

Check the control panel selections. Some dryer models have a "NO TUMBLE" selection. This selection is used to dry items that should not be tossed around etc. Tennis Shoes would be a perfect example.

And there you have it..."My Two Cents Worth"...

The belt is a pretty easy d-i-y fix. My younger brother recently did our Mom's with only a quick description of the operation over the phone from me and he is NOT overly handy.
